The cast, crew and orchestra of Broadway High School’s “Fiddler on the Roof” are putting the finishing touches on their spring production, which opens next week for five performances.
In a small village in 1905 Tsarist Russia, Tevye is striving to honor his Jewish religious traditions during a tumultuous time of pogroms against the Jews. At the same time, he is learning a new tradition—allowing his daughters to choose their husband.
The musical opened on Broadway in 1964, starring Zero Mostel. It earned nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score and book. “Fiddler on the Roof” was also made into a movie in 1971. The popular score includes “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”
The BHS production also includes local elementary school students who portray village children. More than 50 third- through fifth-graders auditioned for 18 parts, according to director Kim Tate.
The orchestra includes James Madison University string musicians, said Ben Frenchak, director of bands.
Performances are March 1-3, at 7:30 p.m. and March 4, at 3 p.m., with an encore performance March 6, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, March 1 and 6; and $8, $10 or $12 for performances March 2 and 3, depending on location. For tickets, call 810-6236.
